It is with deep sadness that the family of Matthew Allan McDermott announce his passing. Matt, late of Newcastle, passed peacefully on 8 February 2026, aged just 28. An adored son of Catherine and Alan, Matt was a devoted and loving partner to Tahnee. He was a cherished brother to Samantha and Steven, a valued brother-in-law to Andrew and Chanel, and a proud and admired uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was also a much-loved grandson of Margaret, and a dear nephew, cousin and friend to many whose lives he touched.
Matthew’s unexpected passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew him. Family and friends remember him for his warmth, loyalty and the quiet strength he brought into every room. At 28, he had already built a life rich in connection and love — always placing family at the centre of everything he did.
Those closest to him speak of his gentle nature and unwavering support for the people he cared about. Whether through laughter shared with siblings, moments of pride with his parents or the deep bond he shared with Tahnee, Matt’s love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life.
A Celebration of Matt’s life will be held at Newcastle Memorial Park, 176 Anderson Drive, Beresfield, on Friday, 20 February 2026, commencing at 2:00pm (Australia/Sydney). Guests are warmly invited to wear bright colours in his honour, reflecting the light and joy he brought to others. As the Newcastle community gathers to remember him, they do so united in grief and gratitude — grieving the years lost, yet grateful for the love and memories Matthew leaves behind. He will be forever loved and deeply missed.
